What happens during a Hypnosis appointment?

The first part of the initial session normally involves talking about the reason for wanting hypnosis and what you are hoping to achieve.

In any following sessions (if agreed necessary) then the first part of these sessions usually involve reviewing how things have been since the last session, talking about progress made and assessing if there is a need to change anything about the therapy.

It is the second half of the session which normally focuses on the hypnosis part of the treatment.

What happens during the actual Hypnosis?

I will talk calmly to you and help you to get into a relaxed state. This may be done through deep breathing techniques, the progressive relaxation of each muscle/muscle group, or whichever way suits your needs and feels comfortable for you. You stay in control throughout the relaxation and the hypnosis.

I will then describe a calming place for you or ask you to create your own calm place, (we will have already discussed what works best for you, during the first half of the session).

Once you are sufficiently relaxed enough for the hypnosis to be effective (which does not necessarily have to be that deep a state of relaxation). Then I will talk to you about your reasons for wanting to have hypnosis and make (pre-discussed) suggestions to help you make those changes.

Following this part of the hypnosis, I will talk you to back to a level of full consciousness and give you a moments quiet.

Is Hypnosis the same as sleep?

No, hypnosis is a different state of relaxation. It is a heightened state of internal focus and a different level of consciousness. During hypnosis, you remain in control throughout and although very deeply relaxed you can talk and even answer questions if you want to, during hypnosis.

Do you play music during Hypnosis?

That is entirely up to you. If you feel you would like music on in the background then I have a selection of calming and relaxing CD’s to chose from.

Although, sometimes music can be a distraction for some clients. It depends on you.

(If you would like music, please ask during the initial consultation.)

What does Hypnosis feel like?

The feeling of hypnosis varies from person to person. Many find it extremely relaxing. Some may experience a feeling of comfortable heaviness. Some may experience a pleasant feeling of drifting, lightness or ‘floatiness’. Some may drift between feeling heavy and feeling light. Sometimes a person may feel a pleasant localised tingling in their hands or feet, some may feel tingly all over. Some may find their thoughts and attention drift in an out like a gentle tide. All are in control of their experience of hypnosis.

Can you make me cluck like a chicken?

Only if you want to. Hypnosis can not make you do anything you do not want to do or anything that does not fit within what you consider normal for you. You are in control throughout.

Will I be able to remember what happens?

You may remember everything or just the bits which are important for you to remember.

Can I get ‘stuck’ in Hypnosis?

No. You can come out of hypnosis, and back to being fully alert, whenever you want to as you are in control of your relaxation. Although most people chose to allow themselves the full experience of the session.
